The modus operandi of tech companies is to do it. Deny doing it. If they get caught, say it wasn’t that bad. If it was, it a mistake and they didn’t mean it. And maybe you asked for it by using the device in the first place.

The internet solved these problems a long time ago by the basic network of relatively small communities being uninteresting targets. The modern internet broke everything by centralizing it all and inserting themselves in the middle to monetize. It added another layer to the OSI network model. The centralized corporate social media layer.
They broke it and sold you the solutions to problems they caused.
The core premise of reddit and Digg was that the people would decide by voting. We’ve seen ample evidence by now that this model doesn’t work. Yet lemmy is based on it. The saving grace might be federation. In other words the model you mentioned. In other words the internet.
Vetting used to happen by persistent usernames that are known to be real life average people, with no apparent ulterior motives. Some social media sites like reddit killed that by making throwaway accounts common. Other social media sites made being a known user too dangerous due to popularity. Which reddit has fallen into now.
Getting too popular means they might have sold out by becoming an “influencer”. It also means putting themselves in personal danger due to the psychos out there who would threaten their personal safety. Which drives away good users, leaving only the opportunists. We’ve been settling in a mix of both. A conveyor belt of pseudonyms that are basically farmed bot accounts for shilling, made to look trustworthy enough.
The Digg/reddit vote model was a solution to a problem that didn’t exist. The problem it was really trying to solve was monetization. Digg tried to monetize and failed. Reddit tried for decades to monetize and it finally succeeded. Look what a piece of shit it is.
It’s often talked about how to grow lemmy like other big social media. Maybe it doesn’t need to. That brings problems of the big social media sites.
Something nobody ever mentions when reminiscing about the old internet is how slow and small forums were. There would be handful of new comments each day. Maybe a new thread or two. You check it once or twice a day, and then went outside. Nobody infinite scrolled the old forums. Nobody cared that there wasn’t enough content. If somebody had something to post, they posted. Otherwise they didn’t. No problem.
If one forum wasn’t interesting enough. Then you went to others. If they all had nothing going on then you stopped looking at the internet.
You establish trust the same way humans have since the dawn of history. Trust in a person and their wares is established by being a known poster with good history of being there to post when they had something meaningful to say. The guy shoveling his wares 24/7 is out for one thing. It’s the make money off you, or impose their opinions on people.
Tech companies reinvent solutions to these things while disguising monetization schemes. We already had the solutions. Nobody uses those anymore.

It’s basically another tradition for reddit clones to surreptitiously setup beachheads for nazis. The ultimate effect of that is the site kills itself before it can ever become popular.
I’ve seen this pattern enough over the years. Reddit is the only OG that managed to succeed in spite of welcoming nazis.
Now that “hiding your power level” isn’t a thing anymore, they can’t help but run openly amok, which drives people away. They stayed in their own festering corners of reddit until 2016.
A few years ago I saw someone post a link about a more generalized promo that offers companies live alerts about keyword mentions and brand management.
The finance subreddits are bizarro world. They don’t align with reality. I know I’m not the only one because once in a while I see posts that break through the wall, basically asking if what all of they’re seeing on those subs is real.
I guess it makes sense when taking into account it’s manipulated discourse aimed at the upper class.
Brave has been severely disappointing not because of Brave company or the browser itself, but because it marked a point of tech illiteracy. The affiliate link insertion should have and would have in the past been enough to end them all together.
The subject cannot see the experiment. The operator cannot fully explain it. The regulator can barely comprehend it.
This is the crux of the issue that prevents anything from changing. By keeping the discussion suspended in a grey area, there’s always the thought terminating well-ackshuallys. The inevitable conclusion being that you can’t precisely define the issue therefore it doesn’t exist. We’ve been past the point where we’re shackled by the sci-fi foretold system that nobody truly understands anymore.
He pretty much covered everything pretty well. One characteristic I’ve recently come to realise with the current state of affairs is such that people make assertions. The internet started off as a proverbial sailing off into the unknown seas to explore new worlds. People listened more than they spoke. When they came upon a new land they listened to the locals to learn about their ways.
Now people come upon a new land and start blasting. They may probe a little to find out who the locals are, and then proceed to tell them why their stupid and wrong and should feel bad about themselves.
As far as I know reddit just uses APIs or straight up scrapes data to create their live game posts. (Fucking hypocrites). Is there anything stopping the fediverse from doing such a thing?
At first it was users creating their own bots that posts these threads. Now I guess they made it an official thing? I haven’t looked at sports on new reddit.
They used sockpuppet accounts to game r/adviceanimals to push posts from quickmeme.com to the top and bury their competitors. At the time it was the most popular image macro site and subreddit. Once it was exposed, that format of meme basically collapsed.
Case in point. The world doesn’t revolve around San Francisco. You guys are neurotically hyperfocused on your little world.
I think some of them actually believe. Like on Blind where the tech bros think $100k/yr is poverty wage. They haven’t been living in reality in a long time. The tech boom has been going on since what like 2010. It’s far longer than the dotcom bubble. They keep managing to jump from one fad to the next. It’s far eclipsed prior bubbles.
It’s long forgotten how reddit was open source. Not only that but people hosted their own instances of reddit as test beds for botting and who knows what else.
The quickmeme incident got memoryholed real fast. That era of image macro memes was basically entirely fabricated.
I’ve been seeing people in real life clearing out their old tech in the past few years. (I’m not declaring it’s a trend). I wonder if they’re going to regret it in this era of tech scarcity. We’ve gone from a period of throwaway devices to a shortage real quick.
The one I remember is Brie Larson doing an impromptu AMA close to around 2010. Back then she was mostly unknown.

Good riddance. The tech focus was watered down over a decade ago (inb4 “but my niche sub about 1382 medieval Ottoman mace makers”). The subs to talk about social and personal life stuff are trolled so hard. Most casual users are completely oblivious to the scum and villainy of bad actors. Save for a few I’ve seen with mods that have a brain. Even then they’re powerless to do all but make sure users know.
It was already on the decline by 2016, but it never recovered from the_donald. Then they brought in a whole new user base with the redesign and push to mobile. All of those users assumed that deranged manic atmosphere was the norm. Maybe that’s how other big social platform are? I don’t know. Maybe they like that stuff. Some of them seem to. Crazy.
Oh yeah, and one of my sports team subs has dug in a network effect even though the mods have been using it for personal gain since about 2010. I hated that place and I’m glad to have been rid of it over the past few years.
Humanity may never see anything like the 90s-2000s era again. That was a distinct milieu of nearly unbound creation and discovery. Not only did corporations remained skeptical of the internet. People were highly averse to being manipulated because the internet was untrustworthy. Paradoxically that’s what made the internet trustworthy. Once trust was established of course. It was a perfect mix of factors that made it a unique period in history.
