But plenty of people joined up to fight in Afghanistan and Iraq, fully expecting danger. That’s cynicism, not cowardice.

If the point of enlisting is personal benefit and upward class mobility, they’re not going to jump into a meat grinder. Cynics only take risks if they think the reward is worth it.
