I laugh so damn hard every time when I imagine this
-
You’ll get shadowbanned once you generate a new wallet address… cuz… u know, that’s exactly what a bot would do! Of course you wont find out about this …till the time comes
-
With this active shadowban, once spending your funds (receiveing won’t be a problem) you’ll see the outbound transaction in your history but your 2nd party never receives it
-
After seeing this, you soon get to figure out you’ve been shadowbanned. You write an appeal but unfortunately there’s no response from admins - and never meant to be
-
You write a negative review about all this shi but uh oh you don’t have enought karma to actually post it since you have only 1 inbound tx (pss… mind depositing more?)
Also you’ll get permabanned if it happened your generated address contained a rude word 😱
Imagine what a AML KYC process would be - you need to record a 360° nude video of yourself reading aloud their political party - ish statute
Reddit did make all their accounts into crypto wallets, and experimented with handing out tokens for community engagement on r/cryptocurrency and some Fortnite forum. I was posting on /r/cryptocurrency and managed to obtain no small amount of token for free… Which, inexplicably, a market developed around and they were worth actual money.
One thing they did correctly, though, was allow you access to the private key passphrase attached to the wallet they generated for you. So you were not tied to their platform to transact.
Selling those was a chore, but I managed to do it a year ago and score some free money. I think I sold when they were worth around $.10 each, which was a good move, as the bottom fell out and they are now worth $.002 (if you can even find someone willing to buy them). The final joke may be on me, though: I just checked the history and at one point in 2024 they were up over $.50 …
I think today you could get banned for something like that:) How dare you! 😂 Selling out the party’s gold!
r/cryptocurrency did manage to figure out how to put your balance as a flair, and all the data regarding which posters received a distribution was public, so if you wanted to you could figure out which posters were selling as they went along. But it started out life as an ERC-20 token on an Ethereum testnet, but are now on Arbitrum.
Selling them involved bridging some ETH to WETH on Arbitrum, using that to pay gas and transaction fees to swap the MOONS for WETH on Arbitrum, and then converting it all back to ETH (and then $$$s). Since I had already imported my Reddit wallet into Metamask, I could do all this even though I swore Reddit off after the APIocalypse.
It was all a huge hassle and convinced me that if crypto might have been the future of money at one point, the nerds ensured that it would never be as easy as a $20 bill.
