So I mean, most of us knew this beforehand and being on the fediverse we probably do not really care, but what was always on the horizon has no happened, the owner of Squabblr finally had enough having to be a decent person and has decided that his site is now “free speech purism”, so he gets to continue to insult LGBTQ people like he always does.

Seems from the comments that some other admins disagreed with the decision (so there were some decent people on that site!) and either left or were removed.

Not entirely surprising the whole thing, granted.

(edit)
Also, apologies as this isn’t truly reddit news but Squabblr was one of the sites frequently brought up in /r/redditalternatives so I figured this might still be relevant?

I mean I don’t care for most of the “free speech” sites because I don’t care for the content that’s posted to them. In addition of never heard of Squabblr. But lets not be hypocrites here, the normal line is: “It’s a private company.” This also applies for companies you don’t like. Not just when a major platform bans people you disagree with in the name of reducing “toxicity” (a completely nebulous term that could be used to describe anything you don’t like.) They can do whatever they want. If you don’t like it, don’t use the site. Simple as.

Sounds like: “If you don’t like being shot at, don’t walk down this street”. Sure, it’s a temporary solution, but we need to fix the problems, not pretend that they will go away on their own.

That’s a bit of hyperbole though. No one is being shot at or directly, physically harmed by someone saying things you don’t like.

There is no real problem. Whoever is allowed to say whatever they want. You and I don’t have to agree with those statements or not find them objectionable… but that’s covered by the just don’t use it part of my comment. It’s not your job to tell on them and certainly not to police them. They’re adults and can do those things with or without your approval. This was one of the big problems with reddit. You have some small, undemocratically appointed group deciding for everyone else what is and isn’t allowed. Peoples ability to speak their opinions, even if their opinions are awful should not be decided by the most sensitive or emotionally fragile of society.

Had to read your comment three times before it started making sense.

I can see where you are coming from and I agree. My comment, although a hyperbole was more in line with “we have to stop the bullies”, but the truth is that there is a clear line between breaking the law and just enjoying your rights. Thanks for the sobering conversation :)

If you fall into the right or left sides camp this will be an unpopular statement… I can’t understand why this has become such a hard thing to grasp
