I still feel like they seem to be building a bit too much hype to what’s going to be just another type of social media in the fediverse with scarce posts made by almost exclusively tech enthusiasts
Maybe they are trying to get enough hype so it doesn’t end up being completely that way.
Hot take: let this brain rot format die already. If you cannot hold your attention for longer than a few minutes at a time, you might want to work on that instead of embracing it.
Current research suggests that declining attention is most likely caused by an expectation of quality rather than actual personal issues. Condensing information is a valuable skill an people do not have time for middle length content just to be disappointed.
But then how am I supposed to use your “research” to make imaginary claims on generational attention spans ?
You might want to give some sources for that claim.
This article from Time summarizes quite well my view of the issues related to attention span. This is certainly not limited to the likes of tiktok or twitter, but I think those can be considered as representing two of the worst platform formats for meaningful content.
This article at bbc references the time as misguided.
This article shows that measuring attention spans is not that easy and our world is more distracting. Not a good think but it does not blame the people.
This Booktuber got some sources and a nice way of presenting it.
One might argue I am splitting hairs and I do not blame you if you think that. I hope some people think harder about their focus and how to find some calm moments. Yet I say that while searching up sources because I got a mobile notification.
Do you not think some people doomscroll lemmy, only reading titles and looking at image posts?
Sure, there are those people, but that’s not the point here. Lemmy doesn’t enforce some arbitrary short length to its posts in an attempt to force the users to engage more with the platform instead of the actual content. The same cannot be said of tiktok or twitter, for example.
Maybe but it’s not the point of it. An infinite scrollable shorts/tiktok like is meant to be doomscrolled
I watch YouTube shorts sometimes, the algorithm gives me mostly comedy, usually some type of shketch where one person plays all the characters. I’ve also seen quick tip or educational videos, outdoor clips. None of what I engage with is doomscroling.
1 - Even when educational you can’t retain all the infos that these short videos give you
2 - Log out of YouTube, and watch the default YouTube shorts feed, you would be amazed how this is a concentrate of shitty posts.
1 - I’m not going to YouTube shorts to be educated, but if Hank Green shows up and drops a fact on me that’ll entertain me for 30 seconds, I’m good. It’s not doomscrooling which was your original point.
2 - Well yeah that’s a bad idea on most content websites, just because the lowest common denominator content is bad doesn’t mean it’s bad once you curate what you want to watch.
2 - but that’s the problem! All the new accounts, which are very often children just growing up, get bombarded with the most evil and actively damaging shit, and they don’t have the ability to curate whatever comes to them, they don’t even know that they need to do that. And if you aren’t spending hours upon hours on the platform, you don’t have time to curate the algorithm anyway, so you will be served poison
That’s a room temp take at best
Seems to have been hot enough to get under your skin, though. Thanks for proving my point. 👍
Lmao what? I think this guy is 12
No, pretty much everyone agrees with you. It’s like posting on unpopular opinions: “I think Hitler was a bad person”
What point did he make?
It really depends on how you implement it. Look up Jaden Williams or ailaughatmyjokes (Silvia), some of their videos could be a really good example of how to do good shorts.
There are several content creators that started with short video and then moved on on Youtube that I just love and adore. Their short stuff is good. But when they aren’t constrained by the format and can do whatever they want, they do videos that are so much better it’s unbelievable.
Yes I want a full-featured documentary about a cute baby hippo. You’re right.
What content would people like to see on this platform? I would think the fediverse audience would be a bit different from your average tiktok or instagram reels user
Reposts from TikTok insta and youtube
I am not average then. I use tiktok to discover musicians, get short informative videos from science enthusiasts, and poetry or life advice.
Some of these are only possible because of the remarkable recommendation algorithm but I stay hopeful.
the entire saving grace of the fediverse is a lack of algos and curation of your own content. algorithms have basically broken social media and the way we interact with the web. quality and substance is nowhere to be seen for the past few years and many of those who migratate to the fediverse do so specifically for the improved quality of content - it’s the whole selling point.
What tiktok does is curate well. But I often find myself searching for new creators by what I already like. Tagging systems and smart groupings can help me customise my feed on my own but are really hard to do by hand. The problem with algos is that I get no say in what they hide and show. I would love my personal bias to be embedded by myself. The problem lies in who controls the algorithm and what their biases are.
Anyone know what loops are?
I think it’s like tiktok.
but federated and open source
I believe one of their terms tho is something sketch about your content and data.
Wanna source that? Cause I’ve been following loops a bit and haven’t seen anything close to that. If anything it’s the opposite.
They said they believe.
Only knowledge has sources; but beliefs sound cool.
I don’t know why I used a semicolon there, but it’s staying.
Hey, believe in yourself, that semicolon belongs there if you believe it belongs there.
Believe in yourself!
Science: No.
Someone provided the source in another post: https://loops.video/legal/terms-of-service#2
What exactly is a red flag there? It seems pretty boilerplate from a quick skim.
I believe the section of concern was

Terms of service/privacy policies would be on a per-instance basis.
U would assume so but u never know.
What nonsense is that?
“All your content and data are belong to us”?
which term you believe is that? https://loops.video/legal/terms-of-service
Ohh no not off to a good start. Pixelfed are pretty good iirc u can add a licence to ur content same as peertube. Lemmy devs rejected the ideas cos they are communists are dont like the idea of ownership.
Happy Groundhog Day I guess.

Got mine yesterday when we were out. Told my kid that it would be a non-corporate alternative to TikTok. She couldn’t have been less interested. Sigh.
Yay! I’m in! I’m very excited about this
I just got my email 2 minutes ago!
I got one but it said it was iOS only
Still can’t login
I got in - but there isn’t much to see/do yet. Not sure how to post videos, can’t see anyone else
Weird
Same. Started suspecting that its app-only.

That was the original plan, but seems like they will create a web app some time down the road
I thought they meant time traveler
The comments are always everyone just shitting on this bullshit lmao
no invite and I’ve been on the waitlist since it’s been announced :(
Why does everyone excited to it? Sorry but a short/tiktok format is shitty. It needs to be stopped here
You’re opinion. I personally like it
Can understand the opinion of having “open” doomscrolling platform but…
