Agentic AI has its place, in a tightly controlled sandbox.

One of the anecdotes was about an agent which wiped out the production database, and all backups. While you can lay blame on the agent (AI or human) who made the mistakes, the real blame in that situation is with the system architect (likely there was no named system architect, but that doesn’t absolve whoever was acting as de-facto architect) who placed the backups in a hot, online accessible and erasable configuration. No agent, AI or human, should be able to wipe out all the backups with their normal access - ideally there are physical doors and keys involved - in multiple locations if the data is of any value.

I’ve been pretty shocked at the “non technical people” who just walk up to our Linux box TV setup, fire up Kodi, navigate the menus and start movies. 10 years ago that NEVER happened, today it’s not unusual. Even 15 years ago it was also common that all kinds of TV setups, including “normal” consumer gear, needed a one page “user’s guide” that a lot of people still couldn’t manage to make work.

AppleTV really is the best option.

The reactors have all kinds of uses… at one point I worked for a company that wanted to manufacture Co60 for medical purposes (radiotherapy for cancer treatment) - and you use the exact same reactors, just load them with different reaction material to get your desired isotopes produced.

The difference between those concrete facts they’re openly concerned about and the between-the-lines concerns they are not stating is: those other concerns are a matter of observation, recollection, testimony in court - and they can’t have objective evidence disagreeing with their own testimony as to what may or may not have transpired within their “controlled areas.”

IDK, about 5% of my nerdy co-workers wear them, and even though heavy-rimmed glasses look kinda-normal on them, it wasn’t 90 seconds before I noticed all the new lenses peeking out of the frames - and once you see that it’s impossible to un-see that, find yourself “flagging” everyone who is wearing them.

Unfortunately, the open source alternatives will only be permitted to reach market at prices of $1000 and up.

I was going to say: the Chi of the cat overpowers the Chi of the toast. While buttered toast may be strong enough to influence its own destiny during a fall (and I would suspect it’s the butter on the toast doing that…), the cat is an altogether much stronger master of its destiny during the fall and whatever weak influence the butter on the toast has would be overpowered by the life-force of the cat.

I did “recon drones” back in 2010… of course they lept at the opportunity to demonstrate kamakazi delivery of explosives with the platform to the Army too…

One facility publicly stated they’re making “submarine fuel” - but that’s pretty thin… same facility can easily make all kinds of fissile material as well.

I don’t know - in my field there’s a lot of “knowledge work” to be done, and if AI helps get it done faster…

In my generation it was the nuclear industry (immediately post TMI & Chernobyl) which was giving away the huge incentive bonuses and premium salaries. I never filled out the Navy application - though I hear they paid the best overall. I did interview twice (nothing better to do at the time), got two offers, declined both, ultimately took lower paying jobs that I didn’t mind the idea of going to work at.
