Selfhosted@lemmy.world•People who are staying on Plex, have you tried Jellyfin? What about it do you not prefer? (real question)English
1·2 months agoTo be fair, i ended up getting another pi4 and setting it up with tailscale, samba, and jellyfin to give to my dad. As he kept needing to ask me how to get logged into my server. Now he just uses the tv app for jellyfin. I use samba to send him films and shows when he needs them and i remove his old ones in the same way. Works well. But i am now managing two libraries :p

I dont leave stuff on there once i have watched it unless i particularly like it. I cycle stuff round. Although i havent hit the max yet and still havent watched it all.

32·2 months agoI set up tailscale on my jellyfin box and my family can use their phone to access the server by turning on tailscale (just open the app and toggle it on then open jellyfin) and cast to their Tv. Not as smooth as plex but works for us and the tailscale means its all encrypted.

51·2 months agoI run it on a raspberry pi4 that is also my pihole and after turning off transcoding its runs beautifully. Running in a docker container. With 1tb ssd attached via usb 3 the whole setup cost me about £100 and has been working for about a year now.

91·3 months agoAs someone who works in healthcare, in IT, who has been directly involved in the commissioning of an AI designed to spot skin cancers from pictures taken with special lenses attached to iphones. No healthcare provider is using these tools in place of doctors. These AI models are incredibly accurate but the human is still needed to spot false positives. They dont leave diagnostic decisions up to AI. I can tell you that for a fact.

7·3 months agoI didnt think that was the point. Fuck AI is just a slogan representing peoples disdain for corporate types who think chatgpt literally the second coming of jesus and is going to save us all. Its people who are taking LLMs and pretending they can reason and think like humans. People that think they can sack all their staff and replace them with AI. Its more complex than that. You know that, i am certain you do. AI can do somethings very well, and other things it absolutely falls over flat on its face.
Unless i am misunderstanding, this was never about the blanket boycotting of anything AI and it was more about not pretending it is more than it is and shoving down the throats of non consenting consumers.
It makes me start looking for the next thing. Got my jellyfin, got my pi hole, my retro console and just recently home assistant set up. (Just a few more buts to add to that). Next i think i am going to look into self hosting a cloud storage solution. Like google drive/photos etc. Would be nice to make my own backups and have them offline

I don’t know anything about the “point of your post” so i can’t comment.
But i would say that after brief google search, if Tim Sweeney wants to defend AIs making deepfake porn then X is 100% thr best platform to do it on. 🙄

1·4 months agoGreat points.
But i feel like they apply more to people who are already using linux. For those struggling to make the switch i would argue ease of use and familiarity are key. Mint and ubuntu are a great place to start.
You are right though.
