I think this is true for computers that are in danger of being stolen. Laptops or PCs in dorms or other shared living spaces. But I live in a relatively secure area, burglaries are very rare and my PC never leaves the building. So the benefits of encryption are pretty much negligible.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•People who've had cancer, what kind of support were you most grateful for during treatment? What support do you wish you'd had?
671·1 year agoI had no cancer, but know people that did and one thing that came up often is that people tend to distance themselves from them. Not in a mean way, but dealing with special needs is tedious and that is often just a cause to not do certain things. Spending time together (no matter what you end up doing) gives a sense of normalcy and can really push someone to keep fighting. Cancer is a marathon with additional sprints (chemo) on top. Not being alone through all of this is a huge help

112·2 years agoHow do they know that you wrote it yourself and didn’t just steal it?
This is a rule to protect themselves. If there is ever a case around this, they can push the blame to the person that committed the code for breaking that rule.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why is it that we get nervous around our crushes?
26·2 years agoI think you already gave yourself the answer in your own case:
Because I give zero crap about what other people think of me.
This applies to people that aren’t in your inner circle. You want HER to be in that circle and suddenly it actually does matter what SHE thinks of you. You have little to lose with people you don’t really care about, but everything to lose with people you do care about. It’s an evil social twist that makes everything so complicated. High self-esteem is just the ability to quickly pull yourself up when you fall and the knowledge that you actually CAN do so. It mitigates the risks of “putting yourself out there”.

16·2 years agoAddiction is not something you can control. In a way she was sick and there is not very much she could have done. Sure, “don’t take drugs while pregnant” or “don’t get pregnant while being an addict” sound like obvious things, but drugs can cloud your judgement.
And that is before you even think about what constitutes as a “someone”. I don’t even want to start the discussion on it, but there IS the question of when a fetus counts as another life/person.

Not op, but I really liked this video, as it explains quite a bit. It is of course a biased video, but still…

Linux@lemmy.ml•Is Clonezilla still a solid choice for complete backup and restoration of partition(s) / drive(s) nowadays?
1·2 years agoClonezilla is the tool I use after all else has failed. I agree that it is difficult to use, but it can do things others can’t. I saved quite a few of my drives with this thing. So while I try to avoid having to use it, it still belongs in my toolkit.
