  • Every time I get downvoted, I move an inch closer to the exit door of this community.

    Lol OK bye.

Nobody gives a shit and complaining about down votes is the quickest way to get them.

Guess what! Outside of a few custom instances that for some reason want to be reddit, the fediverse doesn’t track your total karma.

Unless you’re going back to keep track of your comments for some weird reason, the only time you see a down voted comment is when you get replies.

I could have hundreds of net down votes by now, but I don’t know because luckily my instance doesn’t track votes.

The point is, it’s a little number next to an arrow. Who gives a shit.

  • You know, as much as I hate it… “you know it when you see I but hard to definet” really is accurate.

There’s plenty of things that aren’t outright illegal that are completely inappropriate around children.

And if there are things that are context specific, it gets a lot harder to make a computer recognize a problem.

Audio cues are easy to scan for and computers are pretty good at recognizing sounds, especially in regards to copyright detection (even if their interpretation of “fair use” clause is still fucked 6 ways)

Video is a lot harder unless the computer is trying to match direct images (it’s a lot easier to recognize a still frame from The Avengers when it’s uploaded full size than it is to recognize a slightly warped, smaller cropped version with someone in front of it commenting on the video)

  • Yeah, I’ve never once seen anything but criticism over the US’s involvement in the middle east.

The most I’ve seen is a couple people saying the equivalent of “well SOMEONE had to do something about X” And a bunch of others jumping on them to clarify that X either never existed, or was massively exaggerated and the US isn’t the World Police.

Genuinely would love to see someone link a good faith comment trying to argue the above, so I can tell them all about how they’re a fucknut

  • Can you truly say you’ve had the HB experience if you haven’t recieved emoji/sticker/gif spam from people who weren’t alive for 9/11, have never been outside their country, and refuse to listen to opposing views, but know with full certainty that all western countries are 100% full of genociders and colonial rapists who all deserve the glorious death the super benign, extremely peaceful and misunderstood countries of North Korea, China, and Russia who have never once been correctly accused of human rights violations…

And of course, if they point out that your country has dipped into those things in the past, well your entire worldview is shattered and their whataboutism has solved everything and proves you deserve the death they crave for you.

  • I’m not saying this to try and downplay your own emotions, but some level of “not wanting to see my favorite character in pain” is pretty normal for everyone. Not to this extent, but on some level, for everyone.

In Stargate Atlantis, when Dr Rodney McKay gets a brain parasite that turned his brain into basically a child, I lost my shit. I had to stop the episode to take a break multiple times because I literally couldn’t see the screen. Didn’t matter that I was certain they would have him back to normal by the end of the episode. Doesn’t matter that I know how the episode ends now. Still can’t watch it all in one go without problems.

That might have more to do with personal phobias though, because every other time he’s in danger I react about the same way the other characters do. Eye roll and a chuckle, because he’s probably overreacting out of anxiety (definitely not something I would do… Heh…)

As others have said, and I’m just confirming, empathy is pretty normal, and likely the closest thing in English at least. Can someone ask a German?

  • Same, plus or minus a year.

It took me a week, but I scrambled every comment and post with lorem ipsum and bee movie scripts, deleted the comments, then after verifying I could no longer find any of my original content on any search engine outside archive sites, I deleted the account.

It took so long because r*ddit started limiting API access when they realized people were automating their profile scrubbing.

As I’ve said before about certain countries, if you’re doing everything you can to prevent people from leaving [THING/PLACE] then you might just be shit.

  • 14 and change, it definitely had multiple, noticeable shifts.

And if you didn’t notice, you probably only stuck to a handful of communities, because they changed how the front page works several times, and what communities are default. All of those changed the feel by a lot.

Each change may not have affected each sub equally hard, default subs turned to shit, subs that got turned off of default finally got the reality check they needed, and when they started banning entire subs, there were noticeably less shitty people from time to time as they pruned.

Again, if you stuck to smaller subs, or even mid sized ones but didn’t interact a ton, or just didn’t log on every day, I could see how you may not have noticed.

They definitely ramped up moderation, and the administration got a lot more heavy-handed over the last few years, clearly (in hindsight) in preparation for the big change last year.
