Depends on the platform - some federated instances (e.g. mine, Mbin) keep a tally of a user’s total upvotes minus downvotes as an overall “reputation” score

3·2 months agoReally? That’s new, I signed up this morning and it just worked. They must be being hammered by people leaving Discord too

Fediverse@lemmy.world•FR#153 – What does a Discord replacement look like?
4·2 months agoFluxer.app looks promising. It’s still in very early dev, but according to the site:
These features are coming soon:
- …
- Opt-in E2EE messaging
- E2EE calls
- Federation
- …
The public beta looks pretty good but it’s currently very slow. There is a large refactor going on so I’m hoping for the best, but even in its current state it seems to support many of Discord’s biggest features quite well.

Technology@lemmy.world•SpaceX is seeking FCC approval to launch 1M satellites into space; SpaceX claims the fleet will orbit the Earth and use the sun to power AI data centers
2·3 months agoI don’t think blocking out the sun is the answer to global warming lol
Having lived through 3 partial/total solar eclipses, even a small shift in the amount of light really fucks with the rhythm of the entire environment. Birds stopped chirping entirely at noon last time. We’d just be replacing one form of global disaster with another.
Not to mention we’d end up fully saturating the available orbital space around earth, causing constant satellite crashes and the complete inability to launch rockets through the mesh and debris. At a certain point the satellites would cease to function entirely through all the trash orbiting earth and at that point we’d have essentially walled ourselves off from ever safely exploring space. It’s a terrible idea all around

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Would it be realistic to try to set up an america-free instance?
2·3 months agoI mean you’re not wrong, but assuming everyone is like you is a critical thinking problem, not an American problem. I just think it’s particularly noticeable in Americans because there are a lot of them on the platform and the dumb ones are loud. Doesn’t really seem like a problem worth geofencing an entire nation; just block the idiots.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Would it be realistic to try to set up an america-free instance?
124·3 months agoI get it, the US fucking sucks. But I didn’t choose to be from here and I’m doing my best with what I’ve got. The fediverse has been one of the only somewhat sane spaces I can get away from the nonstop propaganda machine.
Block the American communities all you want, but many of us are here to escape the bullshit, not spread it. Sorry our discussion of our politics in communities dedicated to our politics bothers you I guess? You don’t really seem to me to understand the point of the fediverse

Technology@lemmy.world•I spent a year on Linux and forgot to miss Windows
16·3 months ago- Music production software, esp. Ableton.
For what it’s worth, REAPER works great on Linux. Ik it doesn’t fill quite the same niche as Ableton but it is very capable, especially paired with yabridge for using VSTs via WINE.
Man, if only there were a place like that

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•*Permanently Deleted*
11·4 months agoAssuming your filenames are unique, you can just run a recursive search for the file on your whole music library:
find /path/to/search -type f -name "filename.ext"
It’s supposedly to mess with AI if it trains on your comments, but in actuality it does literally nothing unless everyone on the whole internet starts doing it, so it’s completely pointless and only makes you hard to understand.
Honestly, even if everyone on the internet started doing it, I don’t get the point at all, considering poisoning an AI model like that wouldn’t even make it work less well. You could fix the output with a simple find and replace algorithm, and it’d still be understandable even if you didn’t. It’s completely pointless and a perfect example of armchair activism.

Technology@beehaw.org•No, I will not identify all the pictures with bicycles in them.
5·4 months agoOr they could use a modern tool like Anubis. Captchas are a very outdated method of bot detection atp
I liked ZorinOS quite a bit at first but ultimately found it didn’t have enough customization for me. That and installing a secondary desktop environment bricked it so hard I couldn’t fix it no matter what I tried.
Moved back to Mint and I couldn’t be happier. Especially with Timeshift, I don’t have to worry about bricking the thing, which is a huge bonus for me over Zorin. I’ve barely had to touch the terminal in the whole process of setting it up (even for more advanced tasks like adding an extra desktop panel and configuring apps to run on startup)

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK tricks for one of the cheapest meals: beans and rice
11·6 months agoIf you prefer white rice to brown but actually want some nutrients I highly recommend trying out basmati rice - it’s relatively easy and inexpensive to get in bulk and I almost never eat any other type of rice anymore

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK tricks for one of the cheapest meals: beans and rice
13·6 months agoIf you can get a hold of some chipotle chili pepper, adding a little bit to the beans is a great way to get some smokiness and depth of flavor too. It’s really strong so one container lasts basically forever

Welcome to the Fediverse!
I will say, just like Reddit, we have our share of insane mods, but nobody can get banned platform-wide b/c they can just join a federated instance if their instance owner kicks them out (this is both a positive and a negative; community mods are under a lot more pressure to prevent illegal stuff on a per-comm basis than on Reddit).
Modlogs are public, so you’ll never really not know why something got removed and by whom, even if you disagree with their decision.
I left Reddit when they killed 3rd-party apps, so I never got to experience the wonderful censorship of today’s Reddit experience. Having been here now a couple years, this place feels a lot more human to me, despite (or maybe due to?) it being a lot smaller. I like it here better tbh and I hope you will too. The more the merrier!
I recommend checking out !trendingcommunities@lemmy.cafe if you’re looking for active communities, since they can be a bit harder to find than on Reddit. Also, don’t forget to block the .ml instances, they’re filled with tankies (unless you want that on your feed ig lol).
