1. Your machine learning algorithms are not people. No amount of calling it Alex or giving it a voice stolen from a well-known actress will change that fact.
2. If I traced an artwork or copied GPL licensed code into an non-GPL one, my ass would be beaten by others on the internet.
3. So far, the main usecase of this generative technology is scamming, intentionally creating distrust in the artist community, and an even worse and scummier form of plagiarism, but it doesn’t matter because some shitpost that goes hard, “what if a content creator needs a stock photo?”, and “what if it could be used to resurrect your favorite artist?”.
4. Power imbalance. There’s a difference a young creator not having money to buy a training material and a big corporation wanting to destroy their profession.

From what I’ve heard, sometimes the hacked institutions bow in the form of delaying, or even completely ditching Project 2025-style plans. Other times the institution has enough Russia and/or China ties, that a naive tankie within the group sabotages the whole effort. Yet other times they’re being paid a lot of money and being given certain guarantees (ability of leaving the country in case the hacker’s civil identities become illegal, etc.).

I personally don’t care if someone “steals” my code (Here’s my profile if you want to do so: https://github.com/ZILtoid1991 ), however it can mean some mixture of two things:

1. China is getting ready for war, which will mean the US will try its best to block technology, including open source projects.
2. China is planning to block GitHub due to it being able to host information the Chinese government might not like.

Of course it could mean totally unrelated stuff too (e.g. just your typical anti-China and/or anti-communist paranoia sells political points).
