They’re visible to all the server admins. The difference is that anyone can make their own instance and connect to the network as an admin

I’ve heard good things about karakeep (also requires self hosting) https://github.com/karakeep-app/karakeep
waow
Promotes lazy thinking that can be expressed in 240 characters and makes expressing more complex thoughts structurally more difficult
now i’m sad that this is (afaik) impossible in the future with everything switching to wayland
yeah i’m thinking that if you want you might be able to wrangle this into a semi permanent job
My muscle memory is far too ingrained 😭
Or underpaid and overworked and possibly non native speaker human contractors
no thank you I actually like chatting over a websocket connection instead of having to refresh a page every two minutes
Maybe, but for now the culture is extremely hostile to *brands*. They successfully bullied Adobe inc off the site
There’s no ads on bsky tho D:
yeah that was my bad I might be a little stupid.
I got confused between the relay crawling pdses to store their records for retransmission vs an appview storing records for serving them to clients. Both involve processing similar (v large) amounts of data, but the latter is actually more expensive because you’re also transforming the data to make it useful to clients, so it’s still neat they got it working on a raspberry pi
They have said that in production, their appview takes up about 30 servers while the relay takes only one. Apologies for the rude tone of the post https://bsky.app/profile/why.bsky.team/post/3lku2o3n6es22
Blocking them actually is removing their ability to affect your mood 😌
Can you explain what do you think “backfill” means in the context of the linked post?
Sorry if that sounds disrespectful but we kinda need to have shared definitions for stuff

Censorship requests from the Turkish government are only being applied in the official bluesky app. Third-party apps continue to show censored posts. Feels like that might be relevant
Several people have self hosted relays. Afaik nothing that anyone has used in “production”, everyone just uses the default one. I expect that will change as people figure it out, and trust in bsky pbc drops with things like the current Turkish censorship incident
Example of self hosting https://bsky.app/profile/why.bsky.team/post/3lkwg2djrfk23
The code to run a relay is here https://github.com/bluesky-social/indigo
I am functionally a pr dude for atproto (bluesky) on here because people repeat so much disinfo, and I have “someone is wrong on the internet syndrome” 😭
However, atproto and bluesky are still distinct and I am pretty appalled at a fair amount of bluesky’s recent decisions, esp this one
That’s only if you want to maintain a full archive. You don’t actually have to store a full archive to run a relay
That’s just life on the Internet/fediverse in general, there’s a constant churn of the small websites/instances as people inevitably burn out. You gotta be mentally prepared for it. I’m really sad since .ee was one of the few good instances that federated with the unpopular ones too
The only solution is improvements to the protocol so migrating instances is less painful. A different form of identity (key-based rather than domain based) would be cool to let us keep handles across instances
