then again, the very same type of person who is susceptible to one scam after another is the same person who watches one crime movie after another. because it hits the same spot. people just need to see someone bleed, suffer, loose out, etc. the internet delivers that to them by spreading fear, hate, anxiety etc. it’s all the same stuff.
the person who wants to be told for the 100x time that climate change is gonna ruin the world is the same type of person who promotes hate speech, because in the end, both want to see the world burn in one way or another, just that some people externalize that urge while others internalize it. same underlying mechanism though. people are addicted to the pain, hurt, destruction like the insect is attracted to the fire that burns it.
best thing to include a few screenshots of how easy linux mint is to use and navigate today.

3 hrs is a shitload of time to get stuff done though

more like a half

for me it doesn’t work. tested on both troet.cafe and wien.rocks mastodon instances. neither following my user account ( https://feddit.org/u/gandalf_der_13te ) or following a typical lemmy community ( https://feddit.org/c/dach ) works. both appear in the search results, but their feeds are empty.
edit: update: sometimes it does work but results are inconsistent. probably it was fixed in a recent update and some mastodon / lemmy instances just haven’t updated to it yet. that would be good news ❤️
oh btw: about that sound: Alibaba already does it (and uses it as a way to track you, as all browser audio APIs have slightly different measurable variables)
yeah true it needs a 500 kb JS file that turns your computer into a steaming mess while also draining your battery on mobile

pls post at least 1 paragraph of the article into the post body, to get a quick overview what it’s about.

i would like to be able to follow lemmy communities and lemmy users from my mastodon account.

An important point is that advertising, tracking, all the junk which the OP link demonstrates, is technically not possible in the gemini protocol.
btw this is false. companies can still write a small text to advertise their product or create an advertisement image and distribute it over gemini. if the protocol allows data transfer, then it also allows distribution of ads.

needed to keep the umwashed masses away.
and it also keeps me away. i don’t like non-standard software for use-cases where existing software can already do the job well. that’s just artificially fucked-up architecture. artificial scarcity

yeah i’ve heard about gemini but i don’t like that they don’t just work over HTTP (which would be entirely doable, btw). so i need to download a custom client or a browser plug-in, and i don’t like it. i shouldn’t have to install another 3rd-party software on my device just to interact with online content which the browser can already do perfectly fine.
And then an ad that covers the screen so that controls are not visible, and follows on scrolling.
yeah and the “x” to close the ad is so small that you necessarily misclick (especially on mobile) and it opens another tab that redirects to the play store. now play store knows you’re into this shit and keeps recommending it to you.

especially, a lot of tech CEOs who supported trump are tech CEOs, and dropping the facebook / instagram / etc platforms would seriously hurt their budget.

nah i think that the storage requirement grows approximately linear with the number of users, and maybe in the worst case quadratically; but the typical case should be linear.
yeah you already said it in your edit, but just to respond anyways:
grub’s simplicity is a feature. it does one thing and does it well.
“reddit has made a bad decision” is not news. it’s entirely what is expectable of them.
