Technology@lemmy.world•Arch Linux and Valve CollaborationEnglish
32·1 year agoAs per Arch wiki
Arch is a pragmatic distribution rather than an ideological one.
If you’re a FOSS purist, you shouldn’t run Arch ethier way, because providing proprietary software for those who want it is one of the core principles of Arch.

61·1 year agoI’m convinced someone on LTT’s team is on Lemmy. Two weeks ago one of their quickbits had a title “u/spez endorses lemmy”.
Say what you want about Musk, but bankrupting TWO multibillion dollar companies at the same time is impressive.

Technology@lemmy.world•SpaceX's Starlink May Be Keeping the Ozone From Healing, Research FindsEnglish
36·2 years agoYeah, PFAS comes to mind. It took decades to confirm it’s harmful to humans but at this point it is everywhere and hard to get rid of. Worst part is they try to use other chemicals to replace PFAS, but again how harmful they are we don’t know and we will learn that decades later too because companies don’t want to make long term research before releasing the product. Enviroment shouldn’t be a billionaire’s testing ground.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Is it possible to use Linux without the command line?
16·2 years ago“GUI makes easy tasks easier, CLI makes hard tasks possible”. I’m a Debian user and lately I haven’t been touching terminal at all, unless it’s an inherently terminal task like programing. My only complaint now is that when I did an grub update my config file got reverted to the defaults. All of a sudden I couldn’t boot to Windows from grub because os-prober got dissabled (I’m dualbooting). Fixing that is not hard, as you only have to uncomment one line in the config, but it’s annoying that it happend.

24·2 years agoYou can take a pot of water from the kitchen and pour it into the toilet. Same principle. Also why is the toilet paper flat?

23·2 years agoFuck. I sometimes use the text-only version to access sites with too many moving elements or when the site is geoblocked or doesn’t respect cookies choices and denies access. So far, it has been the most reliable one for me.

23·2 years agoI’m not a lawyer, but I think there’s “spirit of the law” in EU, which means that even though Apple technically allowed sideloading, their implementation goes against the INTENTION of the law and is illegal.

Technology@lemmy.world•Bill Gates says a 3-day work week where 'machines can make all the food and stuff' isn't a bad ideaEnglish
187·2 years agoI remember him saying that computers would make people work less by being more productive, but in the end the difference was pocketed by the rich. I don’t think it’s just a technology problem…

It’s not charity. Billionaires put their assets in foundations because they can use them as a proxy to manage their welth so in case they die their family pays no inheritance tax. Four out of five foundations listed here are controlled by buffetts. I just don’t understand the donation to Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, but it probably not for good reason ethier.
