Nintendo seems to be breaking these patches in 3 “groups”.

    • Performance upgrades only -> Free
    • Performance upgrades+ additional functionality -> Free with Online+Expansion, Paid otherwise (BOTW, TOTK)
    • Performance upgrades+ DLC-like additional content -> Paid (Kirby, Mario Party)

You mean the smart phone apps? Nobody asked them. They should put all performance upgrades free and paid for the extras. One more reason why consoles suck against PC.

Yeah, I agree they’re kinda lame as “functional upgrades” and probably not worth paying extra, but I was just clarifying the difference between the paid and free upgrades so far.

FWIW, performance should already be better even without the DLC, just by running on better hardware. You just won’t get HDR and the phone app extras.

In this list of patch notes, the only games that specifically mention framerate are ones that had capped framerates - the updates are to uncap them. Any game that’s already not hitting its target/max framerate will benefit even without a patch.
